A Step Up

Charming Distressed Farmhouse Faux Finish Painted Pine Rustic Shabby Chic Step Stool Stool Vintage

How cute can this little step stool be?

Let's find out!

I found this stool on Marketplace. It had 30 years of life on it's oil based varnish and was crying out for some attention.

I gave it the once over to determine it's condition. It was solid! I'm not sure that it had ever been used. I also believe it was handmade. Perfect!

I proceeded to clean, sand and clean again. I now had a clean slate to work with.

Now to choose a colour... I have a tendency to paint things white... There are so many reasons: it looks bright, clean, fresh, goes with everything, plus it's what sells! This time, I thought I may change it up and go with grey! Watch out world!

After the cleaning and sanding, I filled holes with standard wood filler. I let it dry and proceeded with a good coat of primer.

Here she is with 2 coats of light grey paint, I used Behr Natural Grey.

Now let's get on with the accent, you didn't think I was going to leave it plain, did you??

I am going to free hand stripes on the top. I have used tape in the past and haven't been pleased with the results. One day I should do a comparison between the types! After the stripes, I want to sand and make the over all effect to be pretty aged and rustic, so imperfect stripes will work really well in this instance. The look I'm going for is 'found-in-a-cupboard-in-an-old-farmhouse'.

Once the darker grey stripes were dry, I gave the stool a quick sand. And by quick I mean thorough lol. I took away more than I left. Perfect.

I then fired up my Cricut and designed a generic French stencil. Here it is cut and ready for transfer paper and application.

I used a cross hatch, dry brush technique when applying the paint. Again, going for that aged look so I wanted a thin coat.

And we're in the home stretch now...

Time to peel the stencil and give it one additional sand with a 220 grit sandpaper for further distressing.

Ok... without further adieu... here is the finished product...

I don't always go in for heavily distressed but when I do it's french and fantastic!

Until next week friends, stay safe and get creative!
