Not too Shabby Wall Decor

Charming Distressed Farmhouse Faux Finish Oak Painted Rustic Shabby Chic Wall Art

I am always looking for new and interesting wall art. Sometimes it seems like there are so few choices. I did a bit of research online and determined that I wanted something unique and inspired by vintage farmhouses.

First, let's take a look at the 'before'.

That's a heck of a farm and I would probably want a photo of it too!

I found this picture from a Kijiji Ad. It was amongst a selection of free items and lucky for me, most people wouldn't even look at this picture. And that's a shame,  because if you look closely, it's a solid oak frame! Now, the colour may not be modern or trendy, however I have a fix for this.

I proceeded in the usual way. Dismantle, clean, sand and clean again.

I then measured the width and height to determine how much wood I needed. I chose to use 1/4 inch Poplar from my local Home Improvement store. I did originally want to use Barn Board however, it was too thick to fit in the recessed part of the frame. In the future, I would like to see if I can make that work...

Luckily, the wood slats came in the width I needed (2 foot). I did however, have to cut one piece of wood; not only did I want some size variation in the slats but it was the easiest way to get the slats to fit.

I had some paint left over from the Cabinet Door project, so I used that for one of the slats. I than added light grey for the next piece, green for the next and well you get the idea. The last piece I painted grey.

I wanted to add interest to a couple of the slats, so I tried a dry brush technique. Blue over grey. Though I liked the technique, I decided that wasn't the direction I wanted to go for on this project. So how to add some interest? I found some cute napkins in my stash and dug out my Decoupage medium.

So here it is mid-progress. The napkin applied on the left of the slat and the glue awaiting the rest of the napkin, on the right. Due to the length of the slat, I had to piece the napkins together.

Here's what the 2 patterned slats look like once the medium has dried and the excess napkins were removed (via sandpaper). Very pretty!!

So are you ready to see the final product??

I think you're going to love it as much as I do! Drum roll please...

I think I'm obsessed! I love the vintage vibe from the ship lap style and the floral pattern. I have so many ideas for more... with all slats patterned or faux finished or all painted... Oh my!! I can't wait to find more!

Let me know what you think are you as smitten as I am?!

Until next week friends,

Sarah
