There's nothing like a good before and after project to get my creative juices flowing! So when I came across this set of shutters at my local Habitat for Humanity Store, I knew I had to have them.
I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to do with them, however, I also knew inspiration would strike! So, fast forward a few days (and multiple Pinterest searches later) I set about preparing them for an update... I gave them a quick scuff with 220 grit sandpaper, cleaned them with some warm soapy water (I used dish soap) in case there was any grease or oil on them, rinsed them and let them dry thoroughly in the early Spring sun. (I wished I could've done the same!) Once dry, I grabbed some cream coloured spray paint from my stash (I used Beauti-tone Creme De La Creme Interior/Exterior Enamel Spray Paint )
and got down to business.
Don't you love my fancy spray paint 'table'?! When you find something that works, well, you just roll with it! With most modern spray paints, you can spray a coat of paint, then re-coat within an hour (or wait three days!!!). My method: I sprayed one side with two coats, waited a few hours, flipped the shutter over and sprayed the other side. There is a bit of a technique to spray painting so practice first, if you need to!
Once the shutter was dry, I decided I wanted a more rustic look so I took some 220 grit sandpaper and removed or 'distressed' some of the paint from the edges.
I love the distressing technique... you really can't make a mistake. I try to sand where there would be natural wear, however it's discretionary. Just have fun with it!
Once I had a bit of wear on my shutter, I rummaged through some of my floral pieces and added a wreath with matching ribbon.
I'm pleased with the result and think it looks so sweet, let me know what you think!
Stay safe friends!
xoxo
